![]() My organization paid very good money for many of these laptops, we've been very good Dell customers for a long time and have purchased hundreds of Dell laptops, monitors, monitor sound bars, docking stations. Look, Mary, no disrespect intended, but I'm going to be completely straightforward with you here: I hate that answer, and I will not accept it. This is problematic, as my organization already does have some USB 3.0 external hard drives, and will ideally be using higher quality USB 3.0 flash drives going forward. This is after a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional 圆4 with Service Pack 1, and the computer in question has the latest BIOS (A07) from Dell. Even if I use the now-outdated (*cough* *cough*) driver from the Inspiron E6440 "Drivers and Downloads" page, the same thing occurs. If I uninstall this driver, USB is back up and running - though at dreadful USB 2.0 speeds. No device is recognized, no matter if I plug it directly into the computer or via the dock. it asks me for a reboot (which I perform), and then USB stops working altogether. Unfortunately, in this instance, when I install the latest Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver for this laptop. To this end, I try and keep drivers as up-to-date as possible, simply because updated drivers are more stable and secure (usually). In any case, I am tasked with imaging our computers, keeping things running ship-shape, etc. They're nice machines, and although I can't quite peg why my buyer opted to get Radeon 8690M's with them, I can't help but wonder how well they'd perform at a LAN party. Seems the solution is to not install the USB3.0 driver until you have connected to the internet (but make sure you install all of the other chipset drivers first and turned off automatic Windows Update until you are done installing all of the drivers).My organization has quite a few Dell Latitudes, and among the most recent are Latitude E6440's. FWIW, I was doing all of my install / boot using the USB2.0 port on the left side. Not sure why your USB 3.0 ports were working right after a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Once I installed the LAN driver and hooked up to the internet, it completed installation with no BSOD and now my USB 3.0 ports are working. The very end of the installation of the USB 3.0 driver appears to need to go online for some reason and that is what was causing the BSOD. Apparently the order recommended on the Dell site is not entirely correct for this particular chipset driver. I ended up getting the USB 3.0 driver to finally install properly if I installed the LAN driver and then re-installing the USB 3.0 drivers. 2 partitions: System NTFS and C: primary NTFS.System Info (let me know if you need anything else): I would really like to get the USB3.0 ports working on this laptop because there is only one USB2.0 port for the laptop if I don't. There is actually a post here that solved this exact same problem by downloading the driver directly from Intel, but the link in the discussion thread is broken (found similar on another discussion forum with the same Intel broken link as well).Tried searching for drivers on Intel website, but none found for 7 series / C216 chipsets.Booting in safe mode and re-installing the driver (get "part of setup failed message at end of installation).Uninstalling and installing older versions of the USB3.0 driver (blue screen).Uninstalling and re-installing the USB3.0 driver (blue screen).Re-installing the USB3.0 driver (get "part of setup failed" message at end of installation).After re-starting windows, Device Manager says that the USB 3.0 controller is installed and working properly, but no USB drive is recognized in the USB3.0 ports.
